Project level: BEGINNER

To make your own Rustic Cheese Grater Towel Hanger… you need these few items…

What you need to get started:

  • Old cheese grater… one that looks old, worn, primitive, and rustic. You can get one from your grandmother, a yard sale, or a box in the attic.
  • Piece of wood… an old barn board works great with a little grey patina.
  • Two 1″ drywall screws
  • A piece of rope or jute cut to around 12 inches long
  • A drill and bit to match the size of your rope/jute
DIY Rustic Cheese Grater Towel Hanger is super easy. You only need a board, a cheese grater, a piece of rope/jute, and 2 drywall screws.
Cheese grater, a piece of rope/jute, two 1 inch drywall screws, and a piece of wood.

Now let’s get started:

DIY Rustic Cheese Grater Towel Hanger - You'll need a piece of wood (old barn wood or pallet wood... aged, old, and has a great patina)
This was the perfect width for me at 5 3/4″ inches. I love the grey patina and the nails.

First step:

DIY Rustic Cheese Grater Towel Hanger - cut height to 18 inches.
Cut to 18 inches.

Cut your wood to size. This already was the perfect width at 5 3/4 inches, so I cut the length to 18 inches.

Second step:

DIY Rustic Cheese Grater - Measure from the bottom 3 inches.
Measure from the bottom 3 inches. The handle from the cheese grater with be the towel holder.

Measure up from the bottom 3 inches and use the two screws to secure your grater to the wood. You can use the holes from the grater like I’ve done and just screw them in at an angle.

You are almost done….

DIY Rustic Cheese Grater - use 2 drywall screws to secure the grater to your wood.
At an angle, use the drywall screws to secure the grater to the wood.

Third Step:

DIY Rustic Cheese Grater Towel Hanger - drill 2 holes for the rope/jute hanger.
Drill 2 holes for the hanger.

Drill two holes in the top for your hanger. I didn’t measure… I just used my eye for placement. Since I used a pretty hefty craft rope, the perfect hole size for me was 5/8 inches.

Last step:

DIY Rustic Cheese Grater Towel Hanger - secure a rope/jute hanger to your project.
Tie your hanger.

From the back, put your rope/jute through the hole and tie it in a knot. Repeat for the other side adjusting for the length you want for your hanger. Cut the excess off with a pair of scissors. I came in from the back because I wanted the wood to sit flush against the wall. If you don’t like the knots in the front, just go through the holes from the front but your knots will be on the back and it will not sit flat against the wall (whichever your preference).

That’s it….

Estimated project cost and profit calculations –

  • Grater – Free to $6.00
  • Wood – Free
  • Labor – $5.00 for .25 minutes
  • Supplies: rope, screws… (calculated as the total X .15) $1.65
  • Total cost – $12.65
  • Retail – $23-29.99
  • Profit – $10.35 – $17.34

Cost goes down and profit goes up when making in multiples so try making 6 to see how they sell. If they sell well you can always make more… if they don’t sell well in your area, you are then not stuck with a bunch of them so.. you can clearance them for $15.99 and move on….

What a cute project. But what I like as well is your project / profit calculations. Great to be including that. Thanks!
